Microsoft slowly stops supporting older versions of Windows. From 2004 Windows 95 and Windows 98 are no longer supported.
According to the CNET article Users cling to old Microsoft operation systems:
- 80% of the companies still have some machines using Windows 95 or Windows 98
- Of those companies 39% of the desktops were running windows 95 or Windows 98.
Additional facts are:
- 27% of the PC's are running Windows 95 or Windows 98, compared to only 7% for Windows XP
- In the corparte environment 13% of the computers are running using Windows NT4.In the USA 27% has Windows 95 or 98, 7% has XP
Many users never did upgrade their computer, they did not install Internet Explorer, did not install service packs and security patches. Unknown is how many computers have the right version Windows Installer, is it 50%, 70%, 80%?. So if you decide to use Windows Installer you must also include Windows Installer (3.5Mb) as extra overhead for your installation.
Also Microsoft acknowledges this; recently Microsoft extended the support period for windows versions from Windows 98. 98 SE and ME to June 30, 2006. For Microsoft Convincing customers to upgrade is becoming much more difficultFrom the start LizaJet Installer was designed to support all versions of Windows, with or without Internet Explorer, with or without Windows Installer each year.
So our Installer even supports Windows 95 with Netscape only.
When you use the download facility of LizaJet Installer over the Internet the only requirement is that WinSock2 is correctly installed, but without it your end-user anyhow could not access the Internet.
If your end-user has Netscape Navigator or Opera as default browser, the LizaJet downloader also accepts their proxy settings.
