Excessive download bandwidth discourages software adoption, takes time, and costs you money. Most end-users do not have today’s most powerful computers or high-speed Internet connections, even in the most sophisticated countries 80% of the users has a slow dial-up connection, although we as developers sometimes forget it, as we are often accustomed to high-speed internet access.
We did take great care to minimize the size of the downloaded files.
Compression
We use the industry standard data compression, which is fast and provides a good compression ratio. So you are sure your files are as small as possible.
If you have to update only one file
For optimal serving your end-users it is essential to have a quick and nimble method to deliver small updates. The small overhead of LizaJet Installer helps you achieving this optimal service level.
It does not need Windows Installer
Some installers which emphasize they have a small overhead ‘forget’ to mention that you must also include the Windows Installer installation, which adds at least 1.7 Mb to your overhead.
The Windows Installer is a much over hyped feature of Windows operating systems. It can be useful for system administrators who have a monolithic configuration to manage, but it is not the right method for installation of standard software.
To decide which version to include in your installation is also not so straightforward. Microsoft is, as we all know, a very dynamic company, until January 2003 they released at least eight different versions of their installer. Now do not think that you simply can include the latest version of the Windows Installer, an we know, life with Microsoft is not so simple. You have to be very careful which version you include, some of the versions you may install on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, other are allowed on Windows 2000 but not on Windows XP. Microsoft explains what you have to do:
” For example, an application that redistributes Windows Installer version 1.1 should check that the operating system is Windows NT 4.0 SP3 or Windows 95/98 before running the redistributable package. Applications using the redistributable package should also ensure that the ANSI version of the Windows Installer is installed on Windows 95/98, and that the Unicode version is installed on Windows NT or Windows 2000. Note that some applications rename the Unicode version to InstMsiW.”
Please do not try to understand this, if you use LizaJet Installer you do not have to. With LizaJet Installer you do not have to worry about the Windows Installer, it is not used at all. Let other people, who do not use yet LizaJet Installer, worry about it.
